Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Patients with Indolent B Cell Lymphomas in Cuba

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Indolent B-cell lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of hematological neoplasms. In certain clinical scenarios, autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a consolidation therapy strategy.
Objective: To evaluate the outcomes obtained in patients with Indolent B-cell lymphomas who underwent autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted between 1985 and 2024 in 10 patients with Indolent B-cell lymphomas. Therapeutic response at three months post-transplant, 100-day mortality, causes of death, and five-year progression-free survival were analyzed.
Results: The cohort had a mean age of 40.6 years. The main indication for autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was early relapse. At the time of the procedure, 80% were in complete remission. The most frequently used conditioning regimen included high-dose cyclophosphamide and etoposide, supplemented with total body irradiation (60%). The most commonly used progenitor cell source was bone marrow, stimulated or unstimulated, in equal proportions. Hematologic recovery occurred on average at 13.8 days for neutrophils and 16.6 days for platelets. By three months post-transplant, most patients had achieved complete remission. The main causes of death were relapse/progression and secondary malignancies. No procedure-related mortality was reported in the first 100 days. The estimated five-year progression-free survival rate was 70%.
Conclusions: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation proved to be a safe and effective procedure in patients with Indolent B-cell lymphomas, confirming its usefulness as a consolidation strategy in the Cuban context.
