Introduction: Autologous adipose tissue processed with nanofat is a biomaterial widely used in regenerative therapy, primarily due to its stem cell content. It is necessary to investigate whether certain clinical characteristics of the patient are associated with the frequency of these cell populations.
Objective: To expose the frequency of stem cell populations in adipose tissue processed with nanofat, as well as their association with clinical variables.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 111 patients (114 samples) treated with nanofat lipotransfer at the Plastic Surgery and Burn Treatment Service of the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical Surgical Hospital. The patients were characterized, and the cell populations in the adipose tissue were identified. The Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied to evaluate associations (α = 0.05).
Results: The median expression rates were: CD34 2.94%, ASCs 8.56%, MSCs 1.54 %, and VSELs 0.68 %. Patients with acute burns showed the highest frequencies of CD34 (5.59 %; p = 0.015) and ASCs (18.97 %; p = 0.036). The abdominal region as a donor site was associated with higher CD34 expression (3.22 % vs. 1.60 %; p = 0.049).
Conclusions: The expression frequency of surface markers in mesenchymal stem cell populations, adipose-derived stem cells, and very small embryonic stem cells from nanofat processed adipose tissue varies according to the patient's clinical characteristics, allowing for the optimization of patient selection for regenerative therapies.
