Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms derived from the clonal proliferation of lymphoid cells. They are divided into two large groups: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Primary lymphomas of the eye and ocular appendages constitute between 7 to 8% of all extranodal tumors; where primary conjunctival lymphomas have a premalignant or downright malignant character.

Objective: To describe the clinical and pathologic characteristics and therapeutic management of a patient with the diagnosis of primary conjunctival lymphoma.

Presentation of clinical case: The case of a 64-year-old male patient is reported, who presented with a mass of 3 cm in diameter, smooth, shiny, immobile, soft to palpation, vascularized, not adhered to deep planes that extended from the superior fundus to part of the nasal bulbar conjunctiva in the right eye. The total exeresis of the lesion and the biopsy were performed. The result was a malignant extranodal marginal B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (maltoma) of the conjunctiva. Therefore, it was decided to reconsult her with the Oncology service for further treatment.

Conclusions: Faced with a patient with a painless salmon-orange lesion in the bulbar conjunctiva and the diagnosis of primary conjunctival lymphoma, histological differentiation is crucial, since the different types of lymphomas exhibit disparate results, and their treatment should be coordinated by a multidisciplinary team.
