ABSTRACT
Introduction: Despite the state's intention to train doctors and specialists at the same time, there are shortcomings in its implementation.
Objective: To present the academic training process for specialization and doctoral training in order to develop guidelines that facilitate the integration of the specialty and the doctorate as an integrated pedagogical process.
Methods: A technological development project was carried out. The strategies employed were based on interviews with resident doctors at the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Surgical Clinical Hospital who are pursuing a doctorate in parallel with their specialization, and with the directors of the institution and the national doctoral committee.
Results: Most of the residents and managers surveyed about doctoral and specialist training considered that specialization should be completed first and then the doctorate pursued, due to the rigor of both processes. Guidelines were developed to facilitate the integration of the specialty and the doctorate as a comprehensive pedagogical process.
Conclusions: This educational research reveals doubts and pedagogical shortcomings regarding the practical implementation of the doctorate in short training programs. The guidelines developed are intended to facilitate the integration of the specialty and the doctorate as an integrated pedagogical process.
