Abstract

Although the body composition of an individual is genetically determined, it is becoming apparent that it is under the constant influence of several environmental forces (dietetic, cultural, as well as aesthetical habits and costumes). It is also imperative to
establish the changes occurring in the different body compartments in the several facets of the health-sickness relationship. It is possible nowadays to reconstruct a particular human being from its components organized by levels of increasing complexity: atomic, molecular, cellular and tissular. The comprehension of the tissue level of organization of body composition might help the health care groups dedicated to the provision of nutritional care to the hospitalized patient in the understanding of the profound changes that Energy Nutrient Malnutrition (ENM) brings about in the nutritional wellbeing.
