Abstract

The present paper is aimed to show the importance of an economically-oriented rationale in the provision of nutritional support. Energy Nutrient Malnutrition (ENM) has an increased frequency in our hospitals. Econometric concepts are discussed that might be of interest to the members of the health care groups. There are scientific as well as economical reasons for feeding and nutritional intervention programs to be included within the Good Medical Practices as procedures, clinical pathways, proccesses, standards of practice, and any form of continuing education in order to ensure an effective health care. The efficiency of nutritional quality programs can only be judged from their economical impact on the hospitalary system. Health proffessionals have the resposability of documenting the savings in costs and the profits in health benefits that might result from such programs.
