Abstract

Introduction: the number of obese at the international level increases, so it is considered an epidemic. Obesity has many repercussions on people's health and may even cause mortality.
Objective: to evaluate if the Body Mass Index is a prognostic factor for general mortality in the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital.
Methods: study of cases and controls with a sample of 100 cases and 200 controls of the year 2010 of clinical and surgical services. The cases were deceased patients and the controls were alive. Patients from the Intensive and Intermediate and Miscellaneous Care Units, as well as those lacking data of interest for the investigation, were excluded for both cases and controls. Of the cases, accidents and suicides were excluded. In the statistical analysis, the mean and standard deviation, the percentages and the dichotomous multivariate logistic regression were used.
Results: significant differences were found according to age (p = 0.010), Body Mass Index (p = 0.011), nutritional status (p = 0.034), stay (p <0.001), diagnosis (p = 0.001) and severity (p = 0.006). The odds ratio for the presence of malignant tumors was 2,776 for the normal nutritional status 0,409, the preobesos / obese for 0,271 and in the case of severity 2,067.
Conclusions: The main diagnosis at discharge, severity and low weight were independent predictors for mortality risk, while those in the overweight / obesity range, this condition was characterized as a protective factor.
