Usefulness of the f/Vt as a predictor of successful weaning from mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit
Keywords:
Yang and Tobi index, rapid and superficial breathing index, weaning from mechanical ventilation, spontaneous ventilation testAbstract
In order to evaluate the performance of rapid and superficial breathing index as predictor of successful weaning from mechanical ventilation, a prospective research was conducted in the Intensive Care Unit where the index value in those patients that fulfilled the classical criteria for weaning from the ventilator was calculated. The predictor value of different parameters that were reported to be useful in the prognosis of weaning success was compared. To evaluate its performance, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used, as well as sensitivity, specificity and its best value. The mean age was 52, 36 years. The calculated value of the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the index was 0.84 (95 % interval of confidence [IC], 0.73 to 0.94). The association of better sensitivity (71.45 %) and specificity (81.4 %) was obtained for a value of 65.5 resp/min/L. The 95.7 % of patients overcame the spontaneous ventilation test and had a successful weaning.
