A longitudinal and prospective observational study was achieved to 22 eyes with more tan - 6.00D), older than 40 year, which were attended in the Refractive Surgery service of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital. These patients did not have predisposition to retinal detachment due to injuries. An evaluation was done in the visual acuity with and without correction, the cylinder and the sphere. Also the complication during surgery and those early and late post surgery complications.
The age was of 49.1 years. The pre surgical visual acuity without correction was of 0.1 (±0.09 r. LP - 0.3) and with correction of 0.5 (±0.16, r.0.2 -0.8). A year after, the visual acuity without correction increased 5 lines and corrected 3 lines. In the pre surgical phase the sphere was of -10.25D (±2.31r.-7.0D to -15.0 D), after a year of surgery it decreased to a -0.1D (±0.68 r.-1.0D to -0.75D) and the cylinder was of -1.45D (± 1.14 r.-0.25D to -5.50D) during the following year it decreased to -0.6D (±0.29 r.-1.0D to -0.25D). There were no complications during the surgery. A 72.75% (n.16) did not present early post surgical complications and in the other 27.3% (n.6) there were mild complications such as anterior uveítis 18.1% (n.4), corneal edema 4.5% (n.1). The latter complications were of opacity in the posterior capsule 13.6% (n.3) and detachment of the posterior vitreous 4.5% (n.1). There was no retinal detachment in this process. The Phacoemulsification with LIO implant is a safe and effective procedure for patients with high miopia
