Abstract

Tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases known to humans, caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, a bacterium, which usually affects lungs and other organs. The objective is to present a case of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient. A 29 year-old male patient, who was assisted due to sudden dyspnea in daily activities, is studied. After relevant studies, results showed radiopacity of the left hemithorax, the cytochemical study showed a predominance of lymphocytes fluid and pleural biopsy showed the presence of granulomas. Tuberculosis should be within the first diagnostic hypotheses before a pleural effusion, even if this patient has good general condition and is immunocompetent.
