Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: For many years, it has been a widespread, albeit incorrect, belief that toxoplasmosis can cause repeated miscarriages and congenital malformations. In cases with a history of such events, it is common practice to look for evidence of T. gondii infection to confirm the presumptive diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. As a consequence, the available resources for conducting diagnostic tests for this parasitosis are excessively used, and the investigation of other possible causes of miscarriages and congenital malformations is delayed.

Objective: To explore the knowledge and perceptions of gynecologists-obstetricians providing services in hospitals in Havana regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and management of toxoplasmosis.

Methods: A survey on knowledge and perceptions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and control of toxoplasmosis was prepared, subjected to expert criteria, and validated. This questionnaire was administered to all residents and specialists in gynecology and obstetrics providing services in hospitals in Havana.

Results: Significant cognitive deficiencies and inadequate perceptions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and control of toxoplasmosis were demonstrated. The proportion of correct answers from all gynecologists-obstetricians to the 17 questions addressing cognitive aspects was 28.8 %. There was no significant difference in the proportion of correct answers between residents and specialists (27.7 % and 31.9 %, respectively).

Conclusions: Based on these results, and taking into account the leading role played by residents and specialists in gynecology and obstetrics in the diagnosis, treatment, and control of this parasitosis in pregnant women, it is necessary to carry out a series of academic actions aimed at increasing these professionals' expertise in performing these activities.
