Usefulness of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Keywords:
platelet-rich plasma, musculoskeletal disordersAbstract
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorders are common conditions affecting the joints, muscles, nerves, ligaments, and tendons. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an increasingly accepted therapeutic preparation due to its theoretical potential to repair tissues with low healing capacity and its safety.
Objective: To evaluate PRP in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs.
Methods: An observational, longitudinal, prospective study was conducted in the Rheumatology Service of the ¨Hermanos Ameijeiras¨ Hospital in Havana, Cuba. In the period from September 2022 to September 2024. 55 patients were included
Results: The mean age was 58.8 ± 11.1, the female sex predominated 58.2% and white skin color 58.2%, the most observed associated disease was obesity with 30.9%, the most affected anatomical region was the shoulder 58.1% and the most prevalent lesion was tenosynovitis of the long head of the biceps 40%, the time of onset of symptoms was 9.7 months. The therapeutic response according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) improved with follow-up time showing a significant association <0.001. Mild pain was the most frequent adverse event.
Conclusions: The most affected anatomical region was the shoulder, the lesion of tenosynovitis of the long head of the biceps predominated. The application of PRP showed improvement in pain and function.
