Alternative for the self-preparation of residents in Plastic Surgery in times of COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: Postgraduate medical education requires physicians in training to master large amounts of knowledge, clinical reasoning, and specialized physical examinations in a short period of time. Even more so in the case of Plastic Surgery and Caumatology residents, to whom surgical skills are added.

Objective: To propose the Anki method as a new method to facilitate learning and a better understanding to apply medical knowledge.

Results: A new alternative that is popular and widely used is the Anki application, which is an operating system that, through the use of digital cards, facilitates study and optimizes memorization. There is no report in Cuba of the application of Anki in academic training, however, due to its advantages, this alternative was implemented in the Plastic Surgery and Caumatology Service of the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Surgical Clinical Hospital, Havana, Cuba. A collection of various decks with multiple images of patients treated at the institution was created on the Anki platform, as well as information on the procedures performed with breakdowns of various topics in order to make a digital catalog for consultations on various topics of the specialty.

Conclusions: According to the opinion of students and teachers, the Anki application was very useful for the self-preparation of residents during the Covid 19 pandemic.
