Abstract

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases represent one of the greatest threats to health and socioeconomic development. In sub-Saharan Africa, arterial hypertension has a high level of incidence in the population, and does not improve even if treatment is indicated, either due to non-maintenance (therapeutic adherence) or due to economic problems related to the level of poverty.

Objective: To describe the behavior of adherence to treatment in hypertensive patients after the Internal Medicine consultation.

Methods: A descriptive observational study was carried out, with an analytical cohort component. The Universe of work was 679 hypertensive patients, with BP figures above 140/90 mmHg.

Results: The female sex predominated with 55% and the age group from 45 to 64 years, 55%. 88% of the patients did not adhere to the treatment in the first consultation, there was a reduction of the risk factor of 51%, more evident in the group of 64 to 74 years who managed to reduce 92%. There is association between non-adherence to treatment and decompensation of hypertension, with RR 8.1.

Conclusions: Non-adherence to treatment is a very frequent phenomenon in hypertensive patients, more frequent in women and patients of working age. Non-adherence to treatment is associated with decompensation, it constitutes a predictable and avoidable risk factor. Health education and the indication of individualized treatments, plus systematic follow-up of patients, influences increasing adherence to treatment and disease control, avoiding complications.
