Modifications in the quality of life of patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with ozone therapy

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease of unknown etiology and autoimmune nature, which causes damage and impairs quality of life.
Objective: To evaluate changes in health-related quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with ozone therapy.
Methods: A longitudinal and prospective descriptive investigation was carried out in the Rheumatology service of the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical Surgical Hospital, in the period from June to October 2023. The sample consisted of 20 patients. The generic health questionnaire SF36 was used, which was applied at the beginning of treatment and four months after receiving rectal ozone therapy, and the semi-structured interview. which was carried out at the conclusion of the treatment sessions.
Results: A predominance of the female sex was observed (95%). The subdimensions with the lowest scores before ozone treatment were Physical Role (30.0%), General Health (37.5%) and Body Pain (47.5%) and after treatment they rose to a moderate level. Women perceived their quality of life related to health better, highlighting the emotional role (80%) and Social Function (83%) and those over 60 perceived their quality of life related to health worse in the subdimension Physical Function, finding a correlation Spearman's test was -0.517 for a significance level of 0.020.
Conclusions: An appreciable improvement was evident in all dimensions of health-related quality of life after ozone treatment.
