Validity of local plasties for the closure of open lesions despite the persistence of the current COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: Local plasties are the main resource within the therapeutic arsenal for the plastic surgeon. The mastery of the surgical principles to practice them is the basis for the successful closure of open lesions.

Objective: To show the validity of local plasties despite the persistence of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out in patients requiring flap closure of open lesions of different location and etiology, who attended the plastic surgery and caumatology service of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital in the period from March 2020 to January 2022.

Results: Patients aged 20-30 and 51-60 years old predominated, with the same percentage distribution (26.67 %). There was similarity in the distribution according to sex (50 %). Most lesions were located on the face and upper limbs (each accounting for 23.3 %). Tumor was the most frequent cause (40 %). The classification of the local flaps showed a predominance of rotation plasties (33.3 %). With the performed plasties, total closure was achieved in 100 % of the sample. In the postoperative period, evolution was achieved in four patients (13.3 %) and with minor complications, among which partial distal necrosis of the flaps stands out. 86.6 % of the patients corresponded to the category of good outcomes.

Conclusions: Local flap plasties make up an existing safe option for the closure of open lesions, regardless of etiology, age and sex. It offers lasting and functional outcomes.
